The first time you sign in to a business Microsoft 365 account, you’ll be asked to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator. You’ll see a prompt that says “More information is required.” Select Next to get started.
This setup requires both a computer and a mobile device.
Mobile device steps
If you haven’t already, download and install Microsoft Authenticator:
- iPhone users: App Store
- Android users: Play Store
Important: The first search result isn’t always correct. Make sure you download the app with Microsoft in its name.
After installation:
- Allow notification permissions
- Grant camera access
- Set the phone aside for now. You’ll need it again in a minute
Computer steps
- Open a web browser and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup.
- Sign in with your credentials.
- Select Next at the “More information required” prompt.
- Proceed through the “Start by getting the app” and “Setup your account” screens.
- A QR code will appear. This is your signal to return to your mobile device.
Mobile: scanning the QR code
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Tap the + icon in the top right.
- Select Work or school account.
- Choose Scan QR code.
- Point your camera at the QR code on your computer.
Completing setup
Your computer will display a two-digit number. Enter this number in the authentication prompt on your mobile device to approve the sign-in. Once approved, select Done on your computer.
Security note
Never approve a prompt you didn’t trigger yourself, unless you’re working with the IT team that supports your organization. Each prompt shows a location map. Reject any unfamiliar sign-in attempts.
